Natural Hair & Fashion with Airie of the 'Fashion to Live' Blog

I can literally spend hours perusing the plethora of high fashion, personal style, street style, and shoe blogs that are out there (but then again who doesn't, right?!).

One of my favorite personal style blogs is Fashion to Live, ran by the gorgeous Airie. Airie demonstrate her unique and modern fashion sense in her day-to-day wear, and also rocks a gorgeous head of thick, beautiful natural hair!

I've been stalking following Airie's blog for a little while and she also has some pretty awesome makeup skills, she can also rock one bad ass Afro!

How long have you been wearing your natural hair and how did you transition?
I have been completely natural since January 2012. I last relaxed my hair in September 2011 and I transitioned for 3 months wearing roller sets done by my long time hairstylist. This January marks 2 years that I have been completely relaxer free.

Who were your biggest supporters during your natural hair transition?
My husband has always been my biggest supporter from day one. I was worried he would freak out by my big chop because my hair has never been shorter than chin length since he's known me.

Were there any critics and if so, how did you handle them?
Everyone else was very critical and had an opinion because I had very long hair which was relatively healthy prior to my choice to go natural. A lot of people could not get past the initial shock of my big chop. I would get a lot of people saying, "but you had good hair already! I just don't understand why you would do this!" "Well, I just hope it grows back..." And I would just say you know what its just hair. It will grow back and I am not defined by my hair or its length.

Does your natural hair play a role in how you dress?
I would love to say my hair does not dictate what I wear, but in a way it does. If I have my hair in an Afro and I have to put on a shirt that does not really stretch, I run the risk of messing up my hair. Same goes if I am wearing a wash and go. I always let my hair air dry so I would have to wear something that I can pull over my head without getting a ton of hair product on it. Other than that no, I do not plan outfits around a particular hairstyle.

A friend calls and wants to hang out for the evening at a local fashion show for an upcoming designer, what are you wearing and how do you style your hair?
I am going to wear something bright or sequined of course! I love bright jewel toned colors as well as sequins. I love my picked out Afro or a wash and go. If my friend is calling me last minute then however my hair is styled is how I am wearing it to the fashion show. If I know in advance I will probably do a cute wash and go that day, or a twist out two days prior.

When did you discover your love for fashion?
In 8th or 9th grade I would say. I noticed a lot of my friends had trendy clothes with bright colors. I did not really get an allowance or have a job so I would eat a cookie for lunch and keep the rest of my lunch money all week, and then take my $10 to Rave and buy a shirt on Friday afternoon. I did this for weeks until I had enough outfits.

Who are some of your favorite fashion designers?
Alexander McQueen, Dolce and Gabbana, and Prabal Gurung to name a few.

What 5 hair products do you love to use on your natural hair?
  1. As I Am Leave-in Conditioner
  2. As I Am Coconut Cowash Cleansing Conditioner (I am addicted to their products!)
  3. Eco Styler Gel (for my edges)
  4. Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel
  5. Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curling Souffle
What do you love the most about where you live?
I live in Tampa and I love that no matter where I am, I am only 45 minutes away from some of the worlds most beautiful beaches. I love the beach so much!

What's your favorite 'go-to' natural hair style?
I love doing a soft wash and go with Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Souffle, and then picking it out lightly into a nice round Afro with a braid in the front, and a cute accessory. The results are soft, shiny curls that are highly moisturized.

Name one of your favorite movies?
My favorite movie is Clueless. When I was finally coming around to loving fashion, my brother brought this movie home and I watched it a million times. I thought that the fashion in that movie was everything, lol. From that moment on I was a bona fide fashion junkie. Not to mention all of the great quotes that are in that movie.
