Kerry Washington's Skin Lightened for InStyle Magazine Cover?

Kerry Washington on cover of InStyle

The stunning Kerry Washington was recently photographed for the March cover feature of In Style magazine and I could not help but notice that Ms. Kerry was looking almost two or three shades lighter that her normal complexion. Now we all know that magazine editors airbrush and Photoshop pictures depending on what they perceive to be a marketable look for their "target audience" but its obvious that the Kerry Washington in the photograph on the left looks almost nothing like the Kerry Washington in the photographs on the right. When I first saw the cover photo, my first reaction was who the heck is that!

Kerry Washington skin lightening

And this isn't the first time that a magazine has been on the hot seat for altering or lightening the skin tone of the black and ethnic women of darker brown tones that have been photographed for their pages. After In Style magazine received much backlash, they issued an explanation on their website and stated that they, "did not digitally lighten Kerry’s skin tone" and that their, "cover lighting likely contributed to this concern."

After In Style issued their apology, Kerry responded via Twitter and said, "Beautiful statement. Thank u 4 opening this convo. Its an important 1 that needs to be had." I guess Kerry is fine with the lighting excuse.

Tell me what you guys think! Should In Style have done something different when they realized the photos were much lighter than normal? Do you think the lightening of Kerry Washington's complexion was purposely done?
